Recycling Wax and the hidden B2B.

Hey there,

We’re in calendar week 8. Jesus, time is flying! We had the first rays of sunshine this weekend, and somehow that instantly lifted everyone’s mood. What happened over the weekend and the story that connects me with KVLR, who curated today’s TOP5, you’ll find out in this edition. But first, nice and easy, step by step:

  1. Recent Cuts - Fresh vinyl and digital releases worth checking out.

  2. Essential Oldschool - Records from the 90s and early 2000s that still matter today.

  3. Top 5 by KVLR - A handpicked selection, carefully curated each week by DJs.

  4. Community Pick of the Week by Richie - One favorite from the community.

1. Recent Cuts - Fresh vinyl and digital releases worth checking out.

#1 Rosati - Divina Nostalgia: Ah, Francesco, you really are one of the best techno producers out there right now. Too bad we couldn’t see each other on Thursday. I’m telling you, this Italian, now based in Amsterdam, knows exactly when to release what. I remember one situation when he was at my place, brought a test pressing and played it for me. I kept saying, “Okay, and if a pad comes in right now, it would be even better.” And like clockwork, that’s exactly what happened most of the time. It’s not like I possess ultimate wisdom, but he just hits my taste perfectly. So it’s obvious that the new EP on the Brussels Fuse imprint will hit just as hard for me. What I notice now is that for the first time, I recognize patterns in his tracks. Before, every track sounded like something I had never heard before. Now you can hear certain elements reappearing. I don’t mind that at all. I actually love that kind of recognizability and crossover. Man, keep pushing. What you’re doing is just amazing. Big kiss to you.

#2 Atom - Ich Bin Eine Maschine: I’ll be honest with you. This track is newer, from the 2010s. And now it’s getting a repress. Even though I play songs produced before 2007 about 99 percent of the time, this track simply cannot be missing from my warm-up sets. I’m talking about the Function remix. And here comes the honest part: I’m not interested in the other tracks at all, and I don’t even like them. But the Function remix is my all-time favorite GOAT track when it comes to a proper warm-up. Must-have.

#3 Pergo - Ritmo Especial Remixes: Yes, finally a proper remix record again, and with such high-profile names. With Mark Broom on the A-side, you instantly get that funky vibe. Exactly how you know him. I honestly can’t say much about Pushmann; I don’t really know him. But there must be a reason why they work together and deliver such a banger. Then Steve comes in. Simply. A. Fucking. Legend. Nothing more needs to be said. The track that surprisingly really caught me is the one by Umwelt. I mostly know him for hard, rather atypical electro, and now he drops something like this? Amazing. Lastly, Ruben Montesco, super clean production, but for me, just a touch too much big room character. Purely a matter of taste.

#4 Cyrk - Not Human: I think the community has a pretty good understanding of my taste in electro by now. I’m not really into that classic “soft” electro. For me, the 808 kick needs maximum decay and ridiculous amounts of bass, and it has to be dark. Dreamy? Not with me. And Cyrk absolutely delivers. What a sick EP. The Client_03 remix is insanely good. The SH-101 is on fire. Big tip.

#5 GGGG - Live Project: Man, do you know what’s classically German? When people say “hä????” (engl. huh????) And that’s exactly what I said when I listened to this double EP. Huh? I still don’t fully get it. So many subgenres on one record, but every single track is amazing. No filler, only killer. It starts with two electro bangers on the A-side, but the A2 suddenly isn’t electro anymore. It’s some twisted techno. Or is it trance? Huh? How good is this? B1 completely got me. Definitely ghetto house. And all the way to D2, which is a totally dreamy house. Absolute killer record. 30.99 euros extremely well invested, I swear.

2. Essential Oldschool - Records from the 90s and early 2000s that still matter today.

#1 Danny Casseau - Hybrid E.P.: The people from Junkyard and Dortmund know exactly where this record is heading. “Master Fu” is one of my most-played tracks when things need to get completely funky. Before that, I only knew Danny Casseau as Atom X with those insanely hard acid techno tracks. I randomly found this record as a white label at Record Loft back in the day and instantly fell in love. For me, it’s a go-to record when I want people to scream.

#2 Droid Sector - Io, 2037 E.P.: There are exactly two Droid Sector records. Some guy named Hervé Geuggis, aka DJ Terrorist from Switzerland. Never heard of him before. But I got so insanely hooked on his music, you can’t imagine. Sure, it’s acid techno, which currently seems to be a bit unpopular, at least that’s how I perceive it. But it pushes so hard. Definitely on the faster side, starting around 140 BPM, maybe even faster. And it was actually one of the first records I uploaded on Recycling Wax on Instagram. I will never sell it.

#3 Umek - Difolvon E.P.: Has it really been that long since we featured an Umek record in the newsletter? That can’t be right. But here we have an absolute gem from his catalogue. Eight heavy tracks, four of them locked grooves. No wonder Chris Liebing wanted the Slovenian on his label. Umek is still active today, but more in the big room techno sphere, which is a bit of a shame in my opinion. But his earlier works remain solid.

#4 Gaetano Parisio - Advanced Techno Research Selection 98-00: Someone who has always delivered heavy sound and has stayed consistent to this day, respect for that is Gaetano Parisio. The Italian simply pressed his best tracks onto one album. Smart move if you ask me, basically a best-of. And the best part is that it’s not even expensive. You can get it starting from 10 euros, and it’s full of amazing music. Must-have.

#5 Aurora Borealis - The Milky Way: This weekend I streamed. I play video games on Twitch while listening to sets. Ultra nerd mode, but I love it. I decided to dive into Hessentag 1995 and listen to more than just the Sven Väth set. Marc Spoon and Pascal Feos actually played after the big boss. And I have to say, Marc Spoon was an incredibly bad DJ in terms of transitions. Painful to listen to. But, and that’s what makes a good DJ, the track selection was absolutely insane. So I was playing, chatting with people in the stream, and when this track came on, I couldn’t believe my ears. What is this beautiful, beautiful track? So melancholic, so hard, so trancy. I got so emotional that I said on stream like some annoying old man: “This is trance. These are feelings. Not that edit nonsense.” I usually try not to be judgmental, because taste is taste. That edit sound existed back then, too, and it has its right to exist. But it just slipped out. For me, trance is maximum emotion, all the strings and pads, that softness combined with the hardness and speed of the drums. Pure emotion.

3. Top 5 by KVLR - A handpicked selection, carefully curated each week.

There’s this promoter from Berlin who once booked me for his Hardhard event. We got along great, and then he suddenly had an idea. He texted my booker asking if I could imagine doing a B2B at his party. And yeah, why not? I know a lot of DJs; I could bring Kathi, whatever. But then he said, “What about KVLR?” And I was like, “hä?” huh? Who is KVLR?

So I checked Louis out on Instagram. Honestly, the idea of playing with someone completely unknown to me was interesting. On Instagram, everything looked super solid. He produces great music himself, definitely much younger than me, early 20s, and I just had a good feeling. So let’s go, why not?!

When the party was announced, we exchanged a few messages, really just briefly. He suggested maybe warming up together shortly before the gig, but I couldn’t make it time-wise. So we met for the first time live in the club. We opened the floor and had about five minutes to talk. Quick introduction, hello, oh, cool, you’re here too, haha. And then we started playing.

And I still can’t fully process it, but man, we played so insanely well together. Such a talented DJ. Sometimes I dropped tracks without even using headphones, and he instantly adjusted the EQ. Lots of fader cuts, playful mixing, and we barely spoke. The music spoke. It was truly unique. These are the gigs that matter. Not pre-planned sets, but let’s see what happens. And to stand there so confidently in your early 20s and push that style takes real talent. Respect.

Now he has joined our agency, and I hope we’ll get another chance somewhere in the future. It will never be like the first time, but now we both know exactly what it can be like. There’s a certain experience we share. Thank you, Louis, for that experience. Great guy. Originally from Hamburg, now living in Berlin. If I could leave KVLR a Google review, it would say “5 stars, gladly again.”

Erase - Momentic:Hi,

I’ve been following your newsletter for a while and thought I’d send you a few tracks.

I’m originally from Bielefeld and moved to Amsterdam about a year ago to study, but also to get more opportunities in music. Since then, I’ve been playing exclusively vinyl and digging a lot at Killacutz, but also online.

Here are a few tracks I’m currently into. Maybe you already know some, but hopefully there are a few you don’t know yet. I picked one track in particular.

What really helped me with digging and inspired my sets is Mixesdb.com. You can find old sets there, sometimes with full tracklists, and through that, I discovered so many tracks. Maybe that could be a topic for the newsletter sometime.

Anyway, thanks for the consistent output. Keep it up.”

Thanks, Richie, for the great track and your email. I really appreciated it. Check out @southregentstreet on Instagram; Richie uploads records there.

What a coincidence, mail from Amsterdam. I was in Amsterdam from Thursday to Friday and played for Elevate @ RadioRadio. Such lovely and friendly promoters, and I even got to close. One hundred percent an amazing event.

That’s it for this week. See you around. 🙂

And don’t forget: keep sending me your favorite track or record. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be the one curating the next pick in the Community section.

Simply reply to this email or comment here with a link to your favorite E.P.

Catch you next week! Be ready to drop the needle on my next picks.

Keep it spinning,
Robin Tasi @ Recycling Wax
